One of the most popular places to try dog sledding in the UK is Scotland. The area around Aviemore in particular is very popular and every year a major race is held in that area for dogs of all abilities and all pure and mixed breeds.
The UK isn't a place known for it's deep snow and while it does snow sometimes there's rarely enough (and it's too unpredictable) to sustain sledding using a typical sleigh. Chances are that if you wan try dry dog sledding in the UK you'll have to use either a rig (a bit like a bike/tricycle where you stand instead of sit - think along the lines of Roman chariot!), a scooter or another device which has wheels and can be pulled along over dirt tracks, grass, mud and stones!
Aviemore and the Scottish Highlands conjure up many images but whether your sense of adventure tends towards the relaxing or the exhilarating, the Cairngorms National Park with Aviemore at its heart, is the perfect place in every sense. From its beginnings in the early 1980's the Aviemore Rally can be attributed as the main reason for the growth of Sled Dog Racing in the UK. Only a dozen competitors braved the snows of 1984, now an entry of 200 teams can be anticipated each year - that's 1,000 dogs and 400 people, plus spectators who travel from all parts of the country to watch the annual spectacle in the Cairngorms.
